Marek walked slowly along the deserted beach, feeling the soft sand beneath his feet and listening to the sound of the waves. The sunset painted the sky in golden-orange hues, and a light breeze played with his hair. He often came here to leave behind the noise of the city and the bustle of everyday life—just to walk and think about himself.
At the water’s edge stood a small boy, about five years old. He was carefully turning old, worn watches in his hands, as if trying to remember something very important. Marek froze—he recognized them immediately.
— Where did you get those watches? — he asked quietly, trying to keep his voice from trembling.
The boy looked up. There was an unusual focus in his eyes and a kind of inner seriousness far beyond his age.
— From my dad — he replied.
— From which… dad? — Marek asked cautiously.
— Those watches were given to him long ago by my grandfather — his father — the child answered. — He said, “No matter what happens, I will always be by your side.”

Marek felt his heart tighten. He remembered that twenty years ago he had given those watches to his son. And now they were in the hands of the boy standing before him, holding them as carefully as if they were the most precious thing in the world.
— When my dad was little — the boy continued — he almost drowned. The waves battered the boat, water got into his eyes and mouth, and he barely managed to stay afloat. Humble people saved him, took him in, and cared for him. They became his family, but he never stopped waiting for his father. Every day he hoped to find him. All his life, he kept those watches as a reminder of a promise he once heard.
Marek stood there, unable to move. Twenty years ago, he had lost his son, and now he was hearing that his son had grown up, had always kept his memory alive, and had passed it on—now to this boy.
— And he always kept them? — he asked, his voice breaking.
The boy nodded, clutching the watches in his small hands.
— He kept them to remember his dad — he said softly. — He always said those watches help you not get lost. And I know he’s waiting… He’s always waiting.

Marek felt tears well up in his eyes. Everything that had seemed lost forever returned through those small hands and the boy’s shining eyes. Something stirred inside him, as if time itself had turned back, linking the past and the present.
He carefully bent down toward the boy and said softly:
— I… know your dad. I am your grandfather…
The boy froze for a moment, then smiled calmly, as if he understood something very important.
The watches glimmered in the sunlight, reflecting the golden glow of the sunset. For the first time in twenty years, Marek took a full breath. His heart filled with warmth. He understood the most important thing: despite years of separation, despite pain and waiting, family always finds its way back to one another.
And holding the small hand in his own, he noticed for the first time that the boy was like a living continuation of the son he had lost many years ago. And deep in his heart, he understood: now he had a chance to be close — not only to his son, but also to his family.
